Connected – Communications skills training for senior clinicians
This is an evidenced-based programme and is highly experiential in nature, using role play and trained actors to simulate conversations that take place in a healthcare setting.
The course provides senior clinicians with a unique opportunity to reflect on their current communication practice, develop strategies to manage complex, challenging and often emotive situations and through practice in a safe and supportive environment, build confidence in having such conversations in the workplace with colleagues, patients and relatives.
Black Belt Program - Professional development
The Black Belt program is a world-leading professional development program for internal communicators. Over the course of 5 years I partnered with Melcrum to develop core training modules and facilitate workshops in the UK and across Europe equipping communication professionals with the skills and capabilities to be able to operate strategically and add value within their organisations.
I also designed and delivered the Research and Measurement for Communicators course and was on the judging panel for the Internal Communications Awards that recognised communication excellence in practice for four years.
Oakhaven Hospice Trust – Encouraging Reflective Practice
I offer clinical supervision, training in having difficult conversations and reflective practice groups for clinicians, allied healthcare professionals and volunteers in Oakhaven Hospice as part of its commitment to making every moment matter for patients.
The NICE Guidance for a positive patient experience calls for knowing the patient as an individual, tailoring healthcare services to their individual needs and enabling patients to actively participate in their care, through appropriate communication, information giving and shared decision-making.
To support this we designed resources with communication excellence at their heart providing members of the Hospice team with the skills and resources to have difficult conversations, reflect on their practice and manage their own self-care and wellbeing whilst supporting patients and families.
The Health Foundation – Communication audit
The Health Foundation recognised that good internal communication could play a big part in it achieving its external goal of inspiring improvement in the quality of healthcare services in the UK.
Working with the communication and HR teams we put together a programme of research to explore how well different the different communication channels were working and the level to which people understood the strategy of the charity. The research included depth interviews with the executive team and a series of focus groups with employees.
The output was then used to develop a set of principles for good communication that all employees could buy into and a channel strategy to improve overall effectiveness.
